House with a View
"L" Shaped Home Embraces Entry Courtyard
Private Residence, Beverly
The site on which the house is situated is unconventional, in that access to the site is from a corner of the rectangular site, rather than from one of its sides. The L-shape was chosen to provide a formal entry court within that corner, while screening the rest of the yard to create the largest private yard possible. The large private yard has patios directly accessible from the family room, the dining room, and the kitchen. The house is also situated to provide maximum sunlight and views to the “public” areas of the house.
This “L-shaped” house consists of separate wings connected by a grand family living area. The “utility wing” contains the garage, kitchen, mudroom, and a small office space. The “private wing” includes a master bedroom suite, two kid’s bedrooms, a bath and laundry area. The family living area consists of a large two story family room and a dining room. The house was specifically designed as one story so that the owner’s won’t experience any mobility issues as they progress into their “Golden Years”.
Another unique feature of this house is the skylights at the first floor level that illuminate a large art studio in the basement. A limited budget required that the house be kept to a modest 2,800 square feet (including the two car garage). The owner desired an art studio with natural light, but wrestled with the idea of taking space away from the rest of the house for it. On the other hand, since the house is one story, it had a larger basement than many other homes. The solution was to recess small areas of the first floor to provide skylights that let in ample light to make a large section of the basement usable as an art studio.
A Home for Entertaining
Private residence, Topsfield
This distinctive house of approximately 6,000 square feet is located on the fairway of a prestigious North Shore golf club. The house is designed with entertaining in mind, with a large living room, kitchen area, breakfast nook, and family room that are all open to each other, as well as to a large deck overlooking the golf course. Included on the first floor are a formal dining room, and an office/library.
The house was designed for a bachelor, but we made sure the house would also be “family friendly” for resale value. While the home has a truly luxurious master suite on the first floor, the second floor contains three additional bedrooms, one of which can serve as an alternate master suite for a family with small children.
We also took advantage of the sloping site to create a walk-out basement with an unusually high ceiling open to the rear of the house, providing a sunny home gym.
Creative Solution to Existing Site Constraints
Private Residence, Hamilton
Situated at the top of the former Hamilton Ski Slope, this site has views all the way from Marblehead to Ipswich. Obviously, a main theme in the design was to capture and enhance these views for the enjoyment of the home owners. Both the south side and the north side of the house are filled with large windows to capture both daylight and these stunning views. In addition, a third floor “Sky Lounge” was created with 360 degree views and an outdoor roof deck.
The biggest challenge in designing this house is the fact that the previous owner had built a foundation for a new house, but was then forced to sell the property. The foundation was of a unique shape, but the planned house was not at all what the new owners had in mind. Working as a team with the new owners, Deer Hill was able work within the restrictions of the existing foundation to design a plan that met all their needs as well as all the items on their “wish list”.
